What kind of references do your characters' designs and whatnot share with things from media and stuff?
I guess that wasn't a good way to introduce this topic...
{ahem}
Is there any references to games, movies, and related things made in your characters, or at least noticed in them?
I guess I'll start with mine.
-< LAVA >-- Lava's hair is, of course, based on that of Neku Sakuraba of
The World Ends With You. Curiously, though, if observed from the back, the five hair spikes in the back would look almost like a star.
- Lava's main weapon, Star Raider, is a kind of Keyblade. In
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, it is explained that a Keyblade War took place between wielders of Light and Darkness, only to strike each other down and scatter to other worlds. Thus, it is likely that the knowledge of crafting a Keyblade could have reached Staramado.
- In the Brawler job, Lava's basic gloves are called "Little Mac". Later, when the ability to connect Skill Charms with each other and weapons becomes available, his altered gloves are named after other
Punch-Out!! fighters, like Piston Hondo and Don Flamenco. His ultimate gloves are called "Mr. Sandman".
-< DOMINO >-- Domino's Angelsoul used to be a Keyblade, too, but was later changed to a katana.
- Domino's weapon as Gunner is a blaster called "Bullet Seed", named after the Grass-type move from
Pokémon.
- Domino's childhood trauma that cost her her love for swimming is much like that of Emma Emmerich in
Metal Gear Solid 2. When her father realized that his wife was having an affair with his son, Hal, he drowned himself in the pool, accidentally dragging in Emma, who became so traumatized by his death that she began to fear swimming altogether.
-< BAHAMUT >-- Bahamut's real first name is Alex, short for Alexander, the name of a recurring Holy-type summon in the Final Fantasy series. Intriguingly, Bahamut's main element is Light.
- Bahamut's design was first inspired by the Chamber of the Fayth in
Final Fantasy 10. The statue in Bahamut's chamber looked much like a human with a dragon's head.
- Bahamut being separated from his homeland is similar to the story of Mallow from
Super Mario RPG. The two are also princes, and their homelands are among the clouds.
- Although he has features befitting a European dragon (namely the wings), his dragon skin is actually covered in fur.
-< VALKYRIE >-- Valkyrie's nickname is based on the valkyries of Norse mythology, which escort lost souls to Valhalla. Her Superform is called Heron Valk - herons were considered by the Greeks as messengers of the gods.
-< VELVET >-- Velvet's first design is based on that of Jolene from
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Velvet's arm cannon is called "Ace of Spades". When connected with Skill Charms, though, it becomes models named after various
Alice in Wonderland characters.
-< FENRIR >-- Fenrir's real name is Kariko, derived from Kakariko Town, a recurring town in the
Legend of Zelda series. Intriguingly, one of Fenrir's themes is that of Kakariko Village in
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
- Fenrir's nickname comes from the Norse mythical beast, Fenrir, a son of Loki who was foretold to kill Odin during the Ragnarok (final destiny of the gods). Incidentally, the Oblivion-born Silhouette that Fenrir opposes is a trickster, much like Loki.
- Fenrir's main element, Wind, is one of the biggest themes running through the
Legend of Zelda series.
-< NECRA >-- Usually, Necra's name is pronounced "nee-kra", a la "negro", the Spanish word for black. However, those of more evil intent pronounce her name "neh-kra", a la "necro-", a Latin root referring to the dead.
- Necra shares traits with many
Final Fantasy protagonists. Like Cecil Harvey of
Final Fantasy 4, she was trained to use darkness, but sought her light. Like Terra Branford of
Final Fantasy 6, she used to be under an uncouth organization's command, but escaped upon realizing her crimes. Like Cloud Strife of
Final Fantasy 7, she has a haunting sense of regret and shame. Like Zidane Tribal of
Final Fantasy 9, she was artificially created as a weapon, but sought a life that had meaning.
- Ironically, Necra's main crystalform weapon is called "Shiranui", a word for white in Japan.
- As Bloodjaw, her wings' insides are comprised of colored hexagons, much like those of Marx from
Kirby Super Star.
- Necra's battle stance is similar to that of Riku in the
Kingdom Hearts games.
-< FLURRY GUY >-- Flurry Guy's name used to be "Fantasy Guy", but was later changed to "Twister Guy", thought up while Mr. Author used Zidane's Meo Twister in
Dissidia. However, it was later changed to "Flurry Guy".
- Flurry Guy's main weapon is a spear, which is often used by Shy Guys in
Yoshi's Island and
Mario Hoops 3-on-3.
- When divided into the FG Bros., Flurry Guy's personalities are split - one is brutal and mains in power, one is timid and mains in wisdom, and one is reckless and courageous. This may also attribute to the Triforce of
Legend of Zelda fame.
- As a Sorcerer, Flurry Guy's basic scepter is called "Jr. Troopa", and resembles the one used by Jr. Troopa in
Paper Mario, starting at Chapter 7.
-< TREYBA >-- Treyba's personality (and voice) is close to that of Beavis from
Beavis & Butthead. He's more energetic and, generally, not as bright.
- Treyba's sugar problem could be the cause for him to train as a Berserker, to put all that extra energy to good use.
- Treyba's charge attack is similar to a one-hit kill move used by Bad Girl in
No More Heroes. They both act helpless to draw the foe in, after which they trip the foe and clobber it like crazy. The only difference is Bad Girl pretends to cry, while Treyba acts like he's asleep.
-< CLAYBA >-- Treyba's personality (and voice) is close to that of Butthead from
Beavis & Butthead. He's more reserved than Treyba, though more lecherous.
-< LANDON >-- Landon's name is derived from "land", relating closely with Domino's compatibility with the Flower element. It also shares the first two letters as Lava's name. Intriguingly, lava cools to form more land.
- Landon's compatibility with Skills involving Aura relates to Lava's relation with stars, vessels of life, and Domino's Flower element, which encourages healthy plant-life.
-< ZEPHYR >-- Zephyr's Superform, Silver Zephyr, is loosely based on the Silver Dragon from
Final Fantasy 9. It also pertains to the colors silver and white often relating to things related to the element of ice.
- Zephyr's basic weapon is "Lucky Mallet", based on the hammer used to grow Issun-bochi, the One-Inch Hero, to a human size. Such a mallet is also used in
Okami to help Amaterasu shrink down to infiltrate the emperor's palace in Sei-un City and to visit Ponc'tan.
- Zephyr's battle stance is similar to that of Tidus in
Dissidia.
-< CLAIR >-- Clair's name comes from "clairvoyance", a Skill that she is greatly compatible with. It's also the name of the Dragon-type Gym Leader from Blackthorn City in
Pokémon Gold/Silver.
- Clair's soon-to-come confrontation with Silver Zephyr to make him come to his senses is much like Lucas and Claus's final battle in
Mother 3, where Hinawa's spirit tries to reach to Claus.
- Clair's battle stance is similar to that of Sora, Roxas, and Xion in the
Kingdom Hearts games.
-< SOLU >-- Solu's name is an anagram of "soul", pertaining to his element. It's also Finnish for "cell", be it the genetic cell or like a prison cell, since he decides not to show fear of other's opinions of him by "locking" his emotions away.
-< ANUBIS IV >-- Anubis IV's real name is Hector Anubis, his first name coming from
- Anubis IV commandeers the "Flying Jumpman", based on the Flying Dutchman, which ferries souls lost at sea to the afterlife.
- Anubis III is actually Anubis IV's mother, and the only captain of the Flying Jumpman to be female. Incidentally, in
Super Paper Mario, one of the rulers of the Croacus line in the Floro kingdom is female.
-< LUMÉ >-- Lumé's name is obviously derived from "luminous", relating to his element of Light.
-< VOLTUR >-- Voltur's name comes from "volt", a measurement of electrical
-< VENOS >-- Even though he's Mr. Schlitterputz's son, he goes by his mother's maiden name of Tigerbloom.
- Venos's BEAST armor has poison injectors in his claws, and also around the tip of his tail, much like a scorpion.
-< FLORA >-- Incidentally, Flora and Venos have hair colored like the other's BEAST armor - Flora has pink hair and Venos has green hair.
-< PROF. AMUNSTA >-- His name, I. M. Amunsta, sounds much like "I am a monster", given his bleak outlook on existing lives and his enhancement via Deathmark Genes.
-< MYTHICS >-- Salamandra, the Fire Mythic, is based on the medieval conception of the salamander, which was believed to embody the element of fire.
- Kaiorca, the Water Mythic, is based on a merman (likely Triton, the son of Poseidon) and a killer whale. His name is also the Japanese name of the Pokémon Kyogre.
- Dardabla, the Time Mythic, is named after the harp of the Dagda. It was able to correct the order of the seasons.
- Ruyden, the Thunder Mythic, is named after the lightning god of Japanese mythology, the first syllable spelled much like "guy", as in "Shy Guy".
- Winona, the Heart Mythic, is a quadruped dragon with features similar to those of Valkyrie, Verda, and Fafnir.
- Gunfuwa, the Light Mythic, is a humanoid dragon with some features similar to Bahamut's. His name is derived from "gun" (army) and "fuwafuwa" (light).
- Dukryst, the Earth Mythic, was actually thought up from the "earthquack" conspiracy (sorry, Reapz).
- Kitshifo, the Soul Mythic, draws concepts from kitsune of Japanese mythology - having multiple tails, able to shapeshift, etc. His Persona (mask) happens to BE his face, as a nod to Ninetails in
Okami.
- Quetzal, the Flower Mythic, is the Piranha Plant version of Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec sun god.
- Snomeow, the Ice Mythic, is basically a Neko (chibi anthro cat) with the element of ice, with garb and features similar to those of Shiva as portrayed in the
Chocobo series.
- Dasha, the Wind Mythic, is roughly inspired by Amaterasu of
Okami. "Dash" obviously means "to run", attributing to Dasha's wind-like racing.
- Kuboori, the Shadow Mythic, is a samurai Boo. His name comes from "kumori" (shadow).
- Kuboori also drinks Shroom Sake, and was said to fool enemies by acting lazy, letting their guards down. These pertain to the Shinto deity Susanoo, as well as the similarly-named character in
Okami.
- Ananse, the Mind Mythic, is based on the similarly-named spider of African mythology. Ananse is said to be a trickster who captured Onini the Python, Osebo the Leopard, the Mmboro Hornets, and Mmoatia the dwarf in exchange for stories to spread to the world.
- Hoshiro, the Space Mythic, is based on an Eastern dragon, namely a celestial one. His name comes from "hoshi" (star) and "shiro" (white/castle)
-< PHOBES >-- Univaude is based on a sphere dressed like a vaudeville performer. "Uni-" comes from its shape's one side. Improved models are Trivaude (triangular) and Quadrivaude (square-shaped). Also, their colors differ - Univaude is blue, Trivaude is yellow, and Quadrivaude is red.
- The "Vaude" Phobes also appear in stars, and must be cleared out in a manner similar to that of the puzzle game
Dr. Mario.
- The "Ghostly" Phobes include Ghostly Alto, Ghostly Tenor, and Ghostly Baritone. Of the three, the Ghostly Alto appears feminine, since the alto positions in choirs are often given to women, and tenor and baritone positions are given to men. The Ghostly Baritone's girth is to match the deep baritone pitch.
- The "Gumdrop" Phobes are like Elementals of the
Final Fantasy games - each one has a different element, based on their color.
- Magenta, Yellow, and Cyan Gumdrops get their color names from the three basic colors in printers.
-< SILHOUETTES >-- Remorses get their name from a feeling of regret, often associated with the dead.
- Bloodlusters, the berserker Silhouette, appear much like werewolves.
-
-< ECLIPSE >-- Eclipse's name comes from "lunar eclipse".
- Eclipse has a Yellow Scarf on his neck in the style of a small cape, and has a Red Scarf tied around his tail.
-< NIENS >-- Niens's first name is derived from the NES (
Nintendo
Entertainment
System).
- Niens, like Ash Ketchum, is gifted with slight Aura control. Niens uses his Aura control to understand what Pokémon say, though.
- Niens's Soulbind allows him to channel Aura to Pokémon to provide a boost of some sort. Michael from
Pokémon
: Gale of Darkness accomplishes a similar feat - when he calls to his Pokémon, their accuracy is boosted.
-< SUNRAY >-- Sunray's specialty, Purify, operates much like the method of purification in
Pokémon Colosseum and
Pokémon
: Gale of Darkness - in which it reopens a closed-off heart. It's also similar to what Pokémon Rangers do, as well as Sheena from
Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life.
- Sunray's favorite food is Yache Berries, which are best when chilled, since she grew up at Yuki Road, the snowy region of Fantaji.
- Sunray helped undermine Ganondorf's goals during
Pokémon Fantaji in a somewhat similar fashion to what EVA did in
Metal Gear Solid 3, donning the Tatyana persona to obtain the Philosopher's Legacy from Volgin. Interestingly, Sunray uses ThunderPunch and Ganondorf can conjure Zap Cannon, and EVA's sticker in
Smash Bros. Brawl boosts Electric resistance.
- Sunray wears a Blue Scarf on her neck.
-< STARRY >-- Starry is able to dream of the future, and can repair other's fragmented memories.
- Starry wears a Green Scarf on his neck.
-< BLESKAZE >-- The name "Bleskaze" comes from "bless" and "kaze" - Japanese for "wind". In a sense, the name could be interpreted as "blessed wind".
- Bleskaze of the Sun Forme are able to soar through the air. Given Bleskaze's likeness to Eastern dragons, this is Bleskaze's favored forme.
- Bleskaze are known to be innocent and shy, much like children.
- Bleskaze rarely appear to humans, except when they feel they can trust someone. This is much like creatures of fortune in Eastern mythology, including dragons.
- Bleskaze's wings connect to a ring of similar-colored fur around the neck, making them appear like a long flowing scarf.
-< DRAKE >-- Drake's nickname, with the "a" replaced with an "e", becomes an anagram of "Derek", the name of his first Trainer.
- Drake is a shiny Charmeleon, but is prematurely black. This could attribute to his clan calling him an outcast.
- Drake wears two Red Scarves - one as a bandanna, and another around his neck.
-< KNOTS >-- One of Knots's attack methods is to anchor himself with Ingrain, and pull foes inward with Vine Whip.
-< PRINCE >-- Prince's nickname could attribute to his upcoming final evolution, Empoleon, which is based on an emperor.
- Prince wears a Pink Scarf in the form of a bowtie.
-< LOCK >-- Lock is a shiny Spiritomb.
- Just as human researchers observe Pokémon, the "researchers" of the Spirit Tribe, including Lock, observe human culture.
-< PYREFLY >-- Pyrefly's nickname comes from the pyreflies of
Final Fantasy 10 - wisps of soul energy given off by those that die. This could relate to the accidental deflection of her death curse onto her first Trainer, Krys.
-< GYM LEADERS (FANTAJI) >-- Duster, leader of the Topridge City Gym, uses Ground-type Pokémon. Like the Duster from
Mother 3, he's known to be a modest neighborhood thief.
- Balthier, leader of the Coolgale Town Gym, uses Flying-type Pokémon. This relates to the air pirate career of the Balthier from
Final Fantasy 12.
- Raiden, leader of the Amethorn City Gym, uses Poison-type Pokémon, maining with Arbok, a snake Pokémon. He was also trained under Snake Pliskin of the Elite Four.
- Coincidentally, Ametorn City is near the base of Mt. Thunder, relating to Raiden's codename, meaning "lightning".
- Zexion, leader of the Forgenta City Gym, uses Psychic-type Pokémon, relating to the illusory powers used by the Zexion of Organization XIII. He also likes to read books, relating to the pastime of Lucian of the Elite Four and to OrgXIII Zexion's weapon.
- Waluigi, leader of the Tropsid City Gym, uses Dark-type Pokémon, relating to the shady nature of the Waluigi in the Mario series. He and his Pokémon also work out a lot, which is said to be why Waluigi delayed his appearance until
Mario Tennis.
- The Ice Climbers, leaders of the Frigirene City Gym, use Ice-type Pokémon, naturally. Popo's Pokémon seem to be fiercer-looking, while Nana's seem more beautiful and graceful.
- Cloud, leader of the Doraku City Gym, uses Dragon-type Pokémon.
- Luke, leader of the Greatroost City Gym, uses Bug-type Pokémon. Incidentally, the Luke from the
Professor Layton games once spoke with a bumblebee at Nazolene's house in
Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel.
-< FEYNDS >-- The term "Feynd" comes from "fiend", but spelled in a way that it sounds like "feigned" - as Feynds are Great Darkness mockeries of Pokémon.
- Some Feynd moves are referred with "Shadow" in front, as per moves used by Shadow Pokémon in
Pokémon Colosseum and
Pokémon
: Gale of Darkness, whose hearts are closed off.
