Pretty much, a bit of curiosity going on here; what do you learn every day?

I intend to use this topic to post something new that I learn each day, I encourage everyone to do likewise. It doesn't have to be a useful skill, it could be something as simple as noticing that the paint on a wall is flaking.

I'll start:
Today I learned that the http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/6854/ttbv0.gif emote is animated. http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/8761/ooci6.png

Bah, can't make a multi-choice poll.

Anyway, I'm probably treading on thin ice here by starting this topic, but I feel I should at least test...

What operating system(s) do you use with a little bit explaining why?
That and your favorite of the lot, I guess just anything about OSes.

However, I'm only counting computers in which you have a choice of OSes and the OSes you can install on them. This kinda chucks phones out the window since they're generally preinstalled and immutable (without certain questionable hacks).

Anyway, onto my post;
Operating systems I have used:
  • Windows 98 (brother's old PC)
  • Windows XP
  • Windows 7
  • Ubuntu (forget version, likely 9)
  • Kubuntu (forget version)
  • Mac OS X 10.6.4 (work computer)
Operating Systems I use at home:
  • Windows XP (Desktop)
  • Windows 7 (Laptop)
However, due to my being forced to use OS X for my Work Placement, I've grown rather fond of the UNIX Command Line Interface since it lets me escape the horrid GUI of OS X.

To this end, I've seriously reconsidered my previous opinion on Linux and plan to install Kubuntu (or anther distro) either on my current Desktop, on my Laptop or my new Desktop which I will plan to build in the future. If not I'll just settle for a Virtual Machine instalation again.

If I'm lucky I can look into making/editing a KDE theme for myself. I should do the same with XP/7, actually. Phazon/Phazon Suit theme!

My favorite OS is probably Windows XP due to familiarity, but Windows 7 is quickly growing on me. As I have said, I didn't like Linux at first but I'm really beginning to see how powerful the CLI can be (the system is even better than the Mac's CLI for reasons I'll go into later, if you want).

I haven't messed with partitions though and I want to be careful with my data. I'll probably do it after I properly back up everything (which will require sorting + pruning of the filesystem, deleting unneeded data and such).

SGTB Server - Here

So yeah, who here besides me plays Minecraft? (hopefully someone who is also a subscriberfag)

If you're wondering what Minecraft is, Minecraft is essentially a browser-based (with a Desktop downloadable version) Sandbox game, where you either build or destroy blocks to create structures.

Yeah, my description sounds very boring but I might as well tell you what it is, in the simplest terms. It's much more fun than my description implies, even more so if you bought it (€10 currently, will go up to €20 when it hits beta).

The most commonly played mode (since it's multiplayer and available to everyone) is Creative (Minecraft Classic).
In Creative, you have limitless blocks of all kinds and instant block destruction. People tend to build anything from towns to sprite art.

Another mode is survival (indev). In this, you essentially try to survive.
You have a health bar, inventory and block building and destruction is limited to your implements/inventory.
You start with nothing and must build your way up (or down, if you prefer http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp214/ShyGuysToyBox/brownguy.png).

There are day/night cycles and monsters love dark places. They will appear in caves or on the surface during the night. If you don't have a sword/bow you are in danger and are best to hole yourself up in a settlement for the night. You'll see why you should, otherwise http://www.shyguystoybox.net/Forumicons/magguy.png

A variation of this survival mode is Minecraft Alpha (infdev).
In this, the world is limitless - it is automatically generated as you continue through the world.

On top of this, new features are added frequently and infdev features many things indev won't, like Redstone (look it up on the Minecraft Wiki).

Eventually, multiplayer shall be added to this mode - can't wait! I think it will be quite epic http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp214/ShyGuysToyBox/brownguy.png

I'll add some posts with images/stories later, like the one from last night in infdev where I went into the depths of the Earth in search of Diamond and Redstone http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp214/ShyGuysToyBox/salmonguy.png

So yeah, if you weren't reading the Shoutbox a day or two ago, I was talking to BY about a PC I want to build. (this will likely happen in up to a years time since I have no money right now because of something stupid)

This is mostly asking for BY's help since he really seems to be into his hardware, but if anyone else can offer good advice I'll gladly consider it.

Anyway, things this PC will definitely be using:
Case: Antec Twelve Hundred
GPU: ASUS GTX 260 (216 core) (already bought months ago, ignore this on the price tag)
Cooling: Air cooling (specific heatsink/fan? undecided due to motherboard/CPU indecision)

Things I would like this PC to use but am unsure on a specific model:
CPU: Quad Core Intel CPU, 2GHz minimum clock
Storage: Single internal 1TB or 2TB HDD, no SSDs due to price
PSU: Modular cabling, unsure of wattage needed due to other parts being undecided

Arbitrary things which are partially dependant on other factors:
Motherboard - got near no idea on this, dunno is DDR3 RAM worth investing, # of PCIe slots, etc.
RAM - See motherboard
Soundcard? - Dunno if there is a point to getting one if the motherboard supports onboard audio

Projected budget would probably be in the €1,000 range, not including the GPU. (~$1,300)
